A.P.U.S. - MAY 23, 1788.......

Hey APUS - What is your take on the Confederate Flag?

Did you know?

On this same day in our history - May 23, 1788 - South Carolina was the 8th State to ratify the United States Constitution?!?

It was also...

  • South Carolina was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation (February 5, 1778).
  • South Carolina was also the first state to secede from the Union (December 20, 1860).
  • South Carolina was the last state to remove the Confederate Flag from their State Capitol Building (July 1, 2000).
  • Among many, many other things, it is the latest that intrigues me the most!

It amazes me that a state would fly a flag that could be so demeaning to its constituents!  Now, I know I am just a Wisconsinite and everyone has different opinions, backgrounds, beliefs, morals, ethics, etc., but can also be a argument for the "backwards" and "offensive" thinking of the Confederate Flag as well.

Aren't we the UNITED STATES of AMERICA?  Don't we stand for equality and everything else that encompasses that?  What does the flag stand for?  What does it stand for to you??  Comment - please - I am interested to find other people's ideas/opinions/backgrounds/ beliefs?

  • Southern Pride?
  • Racism?
  • Rebellion?
  • Segregation/separation?
  • Slavery?
  • Tradition?
  • Other?
How does a flag that was derived out of the Civil War and secession able to stand for anything than that?  You must be able to back up your comment/reasoning!  Looking forward to your thoughts!

  1. My other two comments by Lolli and Sarah got erased in the process of developing this blog - so I apologize for that - you'll have to re-comment if you want.

However - I don't know if we'll ever get away from the negativity of the Confederate Flag just because of how it came to be and obviously the time period that it came out of. No matter how one spins it, it will always be affiliated, to some degree, with racism/slavery/separation/Civil War.
